If you’re moving into a short-term rental, one of the first things to check off your to-do list is to ensure that your living room is arranged in a way that makes it feel like home. If you or your employer has arranged for a fully furnished rental from Concepts: Corporate Suites + Design, you can rest assured that our design experts will take care to arrange the furniture throughout your new home in a tasteful, modern way. However, you’re always free to rearrange whatever you like according to your own preferences. Try these tips on how to arrange living room furniture.
1. Choose a focal point.
Every living room needs a focal point. For most people, their focal point is the TV. Chances are, when you plop down on a comfy couch at the end of the day, you’ll want to face the TV to check out your favorite shows. When choosing the right spot for your TV or other focal point, you’ll want to take the windows into consideration. Make sure that wherever you position the TV, you’ll be able to see the screen clearly with little to no glare from natural light.
2. Create a comfortable seating arrangement.
Once you know where the TV ought to go, you can place a couch and/or recliner opposite it. The trick for how to arrange living room furniture in a way that doesn’t feel cramped (especially in a smaller room) is to pull the couch and recliner away from the wall. If it’s a small living room, pull the furniture away from the wall by a few inches. If it’s a larger room, you may be able to separate the wall and couch/recliner by a few feet.
3. Consider your conversation areas.
Even in a temporary home-away-from-home, you may want to design your living room layout to facilitate conversation with guests. Before finalizing the placement of the couch and recliner, consider positioning them so that they face each other at least slightly. Ideally, they should also be close enough together so that you and your guest can converse without having to raise your voices.
4. Allow for the flow of traffic.
Foot traffic is an important consideration when deciding how to arrange living room furniture. Ensure that there is plenty of space to walk through the living room without tripping over furniture.
